Abstract : Studies were conducted on 4 mango cvs during two seasons to compare the levels of endogenous constituents of shoots in relation to off-season bearing at Kanyakumari (8 deg N., 77.5 deg E.) and single flowering at Coimbatore (11.2 deg N., 76.6 deg E. ). With monosaccharides (glucose and fructose), differences between the 2 localities were mostly significant, but the trends were not consistent. Sucrose and starch were generally higher at Kanyakumari and also the C:N ratio. The RNA values for both leaf and stem and the protein values for stem were inconsistent, but leaf protein content and the total amino acid content of both leaf and stem were higher at Kanyakumari. It was concluded that a generally high metabolic activity and continuous vegetative growth of trees at Kanyakumari might help to produce off-season crops.
