Status and developmental strategies of mango industry in China.

Abstract : Objective: By analyzing the problems in mango production, trade and research, its developmental strategy was explored to provide references for increasing farmers' income and decision-making of the government. Method: Some field investigations were carried out in main mango production areas including Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan and Fujian Province, etc. to collect the information of scientific research and production situation. Based on the statistics released by the Office of the Ministry of Agricultural Development in Southern Subtropical Crops, the production and market situation of mango industry in China were obtained. Meanwhile corresponding strategies were put forward after analyzing the present issues. Result: Up to 2010, the mango-growing area, harvest area, total output and total value of output in China was 129,000 hectares, 89,000 hectares, 877,000 tons and 3.93 billion yuan, respectively. The major cultivated varieties of mango in China were Tainong 1, Jinhuang, Kate, Guifei, Zihua and Guire 82, etc., and they varied in different province. Some problems in mango industry were little science and technology investment, low level of the manufacturing management and standardized production, lagging post-harvest and processing technologies, small-scale production and low degree of industrialization, and irrational allocation of mango production and varieties regionalization. Suggestion: In order to promote sustainable and sound development of local mango industry, great efforts should be made to strengthen the variety selection and extension, adjust the breed structure scientifically, increase more input in science and technology, train and keep scientific and technical talents, enhance the research and introduction of post-harvest processing technology, help develop leading enterprises, build advanced and standardized mango production system, improve brand awareness, cement social service from the authorities and set up a mango warning and forecasting system.
