Abstract : The fruiting behaviour of mangoes from the 2nd to the 28th year was studied in central Venezuela in a dry forest region (mean temperature 24-26 deg C, rainfall 850-1000 mm, altitude 400-500 m). Three phases were distinguished: development (2-8 years) with rapidly increasing canopy and yields; full production (8-15 years); and decreasing productivity (18-20 years onwards) when yield increased less than vegetation. Different planting systems are discussed in relation to productivity and canopy size. It would be most profitable to plant at high density and then prune and selectively remove trees in the medium and long term.
