Abstract : Mature mango cv. Willard fruits were harvested from a home garden in Kerudavil, Jaffna district (Sri Lanka), and fruits were allowed to ripen. Small, dark brown circular spots formed at first, increased rapidly in size and coalesced to form dark depressed anthracnose lesions in ripened fruit. Based on morphological characteristics, sequence analysis of the DNA internal transcribed spacer region and pathogenicity tests, the causal agent was identified as Colletotrichum asianum. This fungus was reported on mango from Australia, Panama, Phillipines, Thailand and Brazil and on Coffea arabica from Thailand. This is thought to be the first report of anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum asianum on mangoes in Sri Lanka.
