Ethylene concentration and polyphenol oxidase activity in mango (Mangifera indica L.) fruit abscission.

Abstract : Abscission of young mango fruits was associated with an increase in polyphenol oxidase activity in the two cvs examined. Of these Haden was more prone than Sensation to abscission and had higher polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activities. The abscised fruit of Haden (but not of Sensation) also showed increased ethylene production. The possible association of these changes with phenol synthesis and with phenylalanine lyase activity is discussed.
