Abstract : Two-year trials were carried out with 14-year-old weak mango trees (weak branch structure and less foliage than normal trees) and vigorous trees (sound branch structure and more foliage than normal trees). The mean occurrence of spongy tissue in fruits was 9% on weak trees and 50% on vigorous trees. The findings are discussed in relation to the transference of solar heat by radiation, convection and conduction in and around the tree.
