Abstract : Horticultural research in the winter rainfall area concerned apples, pears, plums, peaches, dates and grapevines. That in the summer rainfall area concerned peaches, grapevines and pecans. Subtropical [and tropical] fruit examined were citrus, pineapples, bananas, avocados, litchis, mangoes, pecans, macadamia nuts, pawpaws and guavas. Vegetables examined included tomatoes, Phaseolus beans, pumpkins, green peas, carrots and garlic; and ornamentals examined were proteas and Ornithogalum. Other work is reported on: plant and seed control (including the inspection of flowering bulbs for export); botanical research (including the flora of southern Africa, herbaria and the botanical garden); and plant protection research.
