Abstract : Laboratory and field studies were carried out in Uttar Pradesh, India, between 1976 and 1978 to determine the effectiveness of some insecticides against Rhynchaenus mangiferae Mshl. and in increasing yield. Sprays containing 0.05% monocrotophos and 0.05% phosphamidon showed greater residual toxicity against adults fed on treated leaves in the laboratory 15 days after spraying than 0.05% quinalphos, 0.08% fenitrothion, 0.1% carbaryl or 0.07% endosulfan, and were also most effective in reducing pest numbers in the field, followed by endosulfan. A 300% increase in fruit setting and the number of fruits finally obtained was observed after treatment with monocrotophos, followed by endosulfan and phosphamidon. Better yields were obtained when spraying was started on 10 February than on 25 February or 10 March.
