Abstract : The isolation is described of a virus affecting the larvae of Sternochetus mangiferae within the stone of mango fruits in India. It was identified as a baculovirus and caused loss of appetite, sluggishness, browning of the integument and milkiness of the haemolymph. A suspension of the purified virus injected into healthy larvae produced the same symptoms, which were also similar to those reported for a baculovirus in larvae of Oryctes rhinoceros in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. This is the first record of a baculovirus in S. mangiferae.
