Abstract : Notes are given on the habits and control of insect pests of mango in Mozambique, on the type of damage they cause and on characters by which they can be identified in the field. The insects dealt with comprise Sternochetus (Cryptorhynchus) mangiferae (F.), the larvae of which feed in the fruits, the Coccids Aulacaspis tubercularis Newst. (cinnamomi Newst.), Phenacaspis cockerelli (Cooley) and Ferrisia (Ferrisiana) virgata (Ckll.), which are found on the leaves, Helopeltis schoutedeni Reut., which feeds on the new leaves, shoots and young fruits, the Cerambycids Sterodontes (Mallodon) downesi (Hope) and Macrotoma palmata (F.), the larvae of which bore in the trunks, and the Lepidoptera Gonimbrasia zambesina (Wlk.) and G. (Nudaurelia) belina (Westw.), the larvae of which sometimes defoliate young trees. Notes are also given on fungi that attack mango.
