Production and marketing of mangoes in Gujarat.

Abstract : The study examines: (1) detailed statistics of area, production and yield per ha of mangoes; (2) marketing and handling channels, marketing costs and margins; (3) the market distribution system; (4) losses incurred during the various stages of marketing; (5) price behaviour at different periods of different grades; (6) availability of market intelligence on prices, supplies etc.; and (7) constraints in the present marketing system and measures to overcome them. The Valsad district in Gujarat in 1979/80 and 1980/81 was used as the reference period. The first chapter introduces the area under study, describing objectives, methodology etc. Chapter (2) deals with mango cultivation in the selected districts. Chapter (3) specifically examines problems of marketing. Price spreads data are analyzed in Chapter (4). Chapter (5) presents the summary and conclusions. Net income from mangoes after deducting production and marketing costs from gross mango revenue per ha was Rs 1377 during 1979/80 and Rs 3521 during 1980/81. The net income from mango crops per household was Rs 1680 during 1979/80 and Rs 3123 during 1980/81.
