Abstract : Root distribution was measured at various soil depths (0-80 cm) and distances from the tree (up to 6 m). Total root density was similar with all cultivars. Seedling rootstocks grafted with cultivars Haden, Diplomático and Kent had 61, 63 and 73% of fibrous roots ( 3mm in diameter) in the top 0-40 cm layer. With Diplomático and Kent these were mostly in the top 20 cm of soil and with Haden at 20-40 cm depth. Unlike Haden and Diplomático, rootstocks grafted with Kent had the highest density of fibrous roots outside the drip irrigation area. Rootstocks grafted with Haden had the most vigorous root system.
