Abstract : In long-term trials with the avocado cultivars Fuerte and Ettinger, grafted on rootstocks of Mexican, Guatemalan or West Indian origin, the trees were grown in soil with >40% CaCO3. West Indian rootstocks, especially those of Nachlat origin, were more lime-tolerant than the other types. With mangoes, 3?200 seedlings of 80 different cultivars, including mono-and polyembryonic types, were tested over 2 years in soil with 15% CaCO3 content irrigated with saline water. The cv. Has-el-Has and the polyembryonic type 13/1 showed the greatest lime tolerance, with 13/1 also showing a large degree of genetic uniformity.
