Abstract : Monthly measurements showed that twigs of mango plants malformed by F. moniliforme [Gibberella fujikuroi] var. subglutinans infection in India contained less mangiferin than twigs of healthy plants. In both cases, mangiferin concn was high during cooler months and low during hotter months. In healthy plants, mangiferin concn peaked in Dec. and Mar., the times of leaf flushing; in infected plants, variations in the concn of mangiferin were attributed to its conversion into polymeric quinones by the fungus (demonstrated in vivo and in vitro), preventing mangiferin transportation from the site of its synthesis to the storage site (bark).
