Abstract : Fifteen table varieties, 4 juicy varieties and 5 hybrids were studied. Flowering volume was greater and sex ratio narrower in juicy than in table varieties. Among the table varieties, number of flowers per panicle and self compatibility were far lower and the sex ratio (male : perfect flowers) higher in choice varieties that are poor bearers. Among the hybrids, which were from crosses between heavily and poorly bearing parents, flowering intensity, proportion of perfect flowers, and fruit set were greater than for the parents in most cases and in some instances exceeded the values for the better parent. There were indications of self incompatibility in the choice varieties Himayuddin, Jahangir and Alphanso.
