Abstract : The method uses a hexane:acetone (1:1 v/v) solvent, alumina-florisil chromatography columns and a gas chromatograph with an electron capture detector. Sensitivity was 0.01 ng for deltamethrin and cypermethrin, 0.05 ng for fenvalerate and 0.1 ng for permethrin. The method was tested using samples of sweet orange, grape, mango, okra, cauliflower, cabbage, palak [spinach] and French beans fortified with the various pyrethroids. High recoveries (over 90%) were obtained for most samples, although recovery of permethrin was lower than for the other pyrethroids. The procedure is suitable for examining plant tissues low in fatty substances.
