Abstract : Fruit drop was greatest during the first 6 weeks after fruit set. Subsequent fruit drop was negligible until maturity and fruit retention was about 2%. Maximum growth in fruit length, breadth and thickness occurred during the first 8 weeks after fruit set. The fruits could be harvested as early as 12 weeks after fruit set. The starch content was about 8% at this stage of maturity and fell to 2% when ripe. Fruits of 12 to 15 weeks maturity ripened in about 7 days and could be held for another 7 days at 20°C. Fifteen-week-old fruits showed a respiratory peak after 10 days of holding at 20°. The optimum harvest time was about 15 weeks after fruit set.
