Mango industry regional review; Queensland and New South Wales.

Abstract : The development and expansion of the mango industry is reviewed. In the Bowen and Burdekin areas of the dry tropics (the main expansion area) about 75% of the average annual rainfall (about 1000 mm) falls in January-March when the tree is in active growth. Cool drier conditions contribute to the growth check in April-June and the hot dry August-December period allows the crop to set and develop reasonably free of diseases. Developments in cultural, harvesting and handling techniques necessary to handle the large quantities of fruit produced are identified. Possible marketing strategies to dispose of increased production, especially in December, are outlined.
