Abstract : New information is given on the distribution, food-plants and economic importance of 9 species of scale insects in the Middle East. These are the coccids Protopulvinaria pyriformis (now a pest of avocados and ornamental plants in Israel) and Saissetia privigna; the diaspidid Aonidiella orientalis (which occasionally causes damage to mangoes in Israel); the eriococcids Eriococcus araucariae and E. coccineus; and the pseudococcids Antonina natalensis, Dysmicoccus brevipes (which has caused minor damage to date palms in Israel), Kiritshenkella sacchari and Nipaecoccus viridis (which is now causing damage to citrus in Israel and Jordan). The pseudococcid Phenacoccus yerushalmi sp. n. is described from females found in Israel on Pinus halepensis, where they were attended and protected by the formicid Crematogaster scutellaris var. ionia.
