Abstract : Analysis of data on total content of phenolic compounds (PC) in fresh bark from nonflowering branches (diameter 6 cm) of 24-year-old trees of 7 varieties revealed, in general, a negative relationship between PC, expressed in catechol equivalents, and growth vigour. Chinnarasam, with 2300 µg PC/g bark, was the tallest variety (10.1 m) and Cherumani, with 3840 µg PC/g (the second highest value), was shortest (3.9 m). Rumani, with 3860 µg PC/g, was an exception, being fourth in height. It is thought that determination of PC in bark may aid in the selection of dwarf mango clones.
