Abstract : As a crop diversification measure, fruit orchard establishment is being recommended for those areas of Brazil where citrus fruits have been eradicated in order to control the spread of citrus blight. Amongst the species recommended, avocado and mango are particularly attractive; the two crops require very similar soil and climatic conditions. The present study was carried out to evaluate the economics of investment in these crops and as a basis for management recommendations. Data are presented on production and maintenance of orchards for the first six years (establishment phase) and for maintenance costs thereafter. All operations (land preparation, planting, irrigation, weeding, etc.) are costed in man and machinery time required and quantities of agrochemical inputs and manure are listed. General information on the two species, their varieties, pests and diseases and productivity are also given. The analysis indicates an IRR of 9% for avocado and 26% for mango over a 22 year project horizon; some scope exists for selecting varieties which produce out of season.
