Agricultural Situation in India 40 : 507-514

Abstract : Mangoes account for about 40% of the area and production of fruit crops in India. During 1981/82 exports of mangoes and mango products earned foreign exchange worth around 210 million rupees. Although India is the largest producer of mangoes, accounting for 63% of the world production of 13 444 000 t., her share in total world exports is only 28%. India occupies fourth place among exporting countries, following the Philippines, Thailand and Mexico. As well as the traditional mango producing countries, other countries such as Israel are entering the field of production and export. In view of this situation, the study examines the trend in exports of mango and its products, reviews the present state of domestic supply, identifies the constraints to increasing the export of mangoes, and suggests measures for increasing exports.
