Abstract : KNO3 sprayed on the foliage promotes earlier flowering and hence earlier harvesting. To investigate the probable effect of KNO3 on ethylene biosynthesis, AgNO3 at 250 p.p.m. was sprayed on mango trees (cv. Manila) 2 and 4 h after applying KNO3 at 2%, and COCl2 at 200 p.p.m. was sprayed 1 h after applying KNO3. COCl2, which is known to inhibit ethylene biosynthesis, inhibited flowering, and AgNO3, which inhibits the action of ethylene, partially inhibited flowering. It is concluded that KNO3 promotes ethylene biosynthesis in mango.
