Abstract : A field trial was carried out in Uttar Pradesh, India, to determine the effectiveness of a fogging machine in applying insecticide against the cicadellids Idioscopus clypealis, I. niveosparsus and Amritodus atkinsoni on mango. Malathion, which is known to be low in toxicity to the pest, was used as the test compound, mixed with diesel at a ratio of 1.5:8.5. The orchard selected had a high nymphal population of I. clypealis (21.8-73.4 nymphs/panicle). Post-treatment counts showed a drastic reduction to 0.0-0.4 nymphs/panicle in the treated trees after 24 h and a zero population after 3 and 7 days. This method is cheaper and less laborious and time-consuming than conventional spraying, and ensures uniform dispersal of insecticide.
