Abstract : In the summer of 1984, Protopulvinaria mangiferae was recorded for the 1st time in South Africa, on mangoes in the Northern Transvaal. Notes are provided on its recognition, biology, food plants, distribution, injuriousness and control. Continuous monthly sampling for natural enemies for 2 years yielded the primary parasitoids Coccophagus pulvinariae and Tetrastichus sp. and the hyperparasitoid Marietta javensis. The hyperparasitoid was present for most of the year, and its population was very high in November-February. An unidentified coccinellid preyed mainly on immature stages of the scale.
