Abstract : In a study in an Ismailian orchard drainage water alone or mixed with river water at 3:1 adversely affected all the plant and soil parameters tested (germination and polyembryony of cv. Zebda seeds, seedling shoot growth, leaf pigments, Na+ and Cl- content of leaf and root) and high levels of Na+ and Cl- were observed in leaves which exhibited burn symptoms. However, when mixed with river water in the ratios 1:1 or 1:3, drainage water had no depressive effects on the parameters tested. It was concluded that when mixed 1:1 the water may be used for irrigation on sandy soil but a ratio of 1:4 may be safer.
