Economics of investment in mango cultivation in Karnataka.

Abstract : An economic analyis of mango cultivation was carried out to determine the costs and returns and the soundness of investment, using investment appraisal techniques. The results showed that it is profitable to invest in mango cultivation which gives an internal rate of return around 30% and a benefit-cost ratio above 2. The payback period was slightly more and it takes 11 years from planting to recover the investment. The income from mango cultivation was comparatively low due to neglect of orchards because of price and yield fluctuations and prevailing methods of marketing, early action is required to solve some of these problems. The optimum size of orchard was found to be around 0.8 ha.
