Abstract : Field studies were carried out in Costa Rica to compare the efficiency of Dipterex [trichlorfon] and malathion against Anastrepha spp. on 2 varieties of mango. The most common species in this study was A. obliqua. The use of these insecticides alone or in combination reduced pest numbers. There was no significant difference between the treatments. Infestation was low until the 11th week after fruit set and then increased until the 15-16th weeks. The variety Tommy Atkins had a lower incidence of A. obliqua than Irwin. Modified McPhail traps showed the presence of large numbers of adults 2 weeks after the initial rains of the wet season. It is suggested that mangoes are infested by adults emerging from pupae in the soil and by migratory adults.
