Abstract : The conservation and availability of Mangifera germplasm and its utilization in improving mango varieties, particularly in India, is discussed. Six species are considered to be endangered, 5 vulnerable, 3 rare and 15 very localized or endemic. Fifteen species are closely related to M. indica, while 13 species have edible fruit. Some of the best cultivars for high density orchards are indicated.
