Abstract : This study is based on a survey conducted in Kolar district of Karnataka to assess the extent of postharvest losses of mango to the retail or the processing factory level. Three important mango mandies, Srinivasapur, Chintamani and Mulabagal, were surveyed to assess marketing loss at both the wholesale and retail levels. Four processing units in and around Bangalore city were also surveyed to assess losses at the processing factories. Postharvest losses occurred mainly at two stages in the distribution channel: (1) at the assembling market where the produce was brought from the field and sorted out for sale or transport; and (2) at the time of storage for ripening at the wholesale/retail/processing factory level.
