Abstract : Panicles of mango were sampled in India for the new pest Thrips palmi. Distribution of the pest was found to be aggregated, and the data fitted a negative binomial model. The 4 quadrants of the tree (north, south, east and west) did not differ significantly in infestation, but the lower canopy had significantly more thrips than the upper. The lower canopy was considered most suitable for sampling, and sample sizes recommended were 55 panicles/tree for survey purposes and 92 panicles/tree for life-table studies. Formulae for normalizing the data are presented.
