Mango fertilizer trials. Preliminary results.

Abstract : In a NPK trial at Friedenheim Experiment Farm with 6-year-old mango trees, cv. Sensation, the highest yield was obtained with a leaf-N concentration of 1.17-1.40%, and a leaf-K concentration of 0.84-1.03%. Higher leaf-K concentrations were detrimental with regard to yields. In a similar trial at Hoedspruit with 15-year-old trees the optimal leaf-N and leaf-K values were 1.62-1.78% and 0.64-0.84%, respectively. Leaf samples taken in Nov. gave the most reliable results. In a storage test in which fruits from the trials were stored at 11°C and then held at 21°, higher N levels depressed fruit colour development, but flavour, spoilage incidence and the incidence of certain physiological disorders were not affected.
