Annual report for 1 July, 1972 to 30 June, 1973. : 213 pp.
Abstract : Research on sub-tropical fruit is briefly reported as follows: Avocados: Fruit storage studies; investigations on sun blotch virus; pre-harvest sprays for the control of Phomopsis spot and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata]; aerial survey for root rot (Phytophthora sp.) detection; and fertilizer experiments. Citrus: Breeding and selection; variety trials; micro-budding studies; nursery soil mixtures; cultivation experiments; fertilizer trials; weed control; pest and disease control; and fruit storage studies. Litchis: Studies on fruit crack, the control of post-harvest diseases, CA storage, and the biology and control of the bark borer Salagena sp. Macadamias: Selection; spacing and fertilizer experiments and pest and disease control. Passion fruit: Hybrid evaluations; breeding for resistance to Phytophthora stem rot; and control of Meloidogyne sp.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Research on deciduous fruit briefly reported here included: Apples: The effect of pruning on bitter pit incidence; pot trials on re-establishment disease; and trials on ULV spraying of fungicides. Pears: Studies on fruit set in Packham's Triumph. Peaches: Breeding and selection; studies on rosette disease; and insecticide evaluations for the control of false codling moth. Cherries: Studies on propagation techniques, and a rootstock trial. Research on nuts included: Pecans: Evaluation of imported cvs; storage of trees lifted in winter; and techniques for clonal rootstocks propagation.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Research on tropical crops briefly reported here includes: Bananas: Selection; the use of blue polyethylene bunch covers; foliar analysis; studies on P nutrition; and fruit dehydration and storage. Coffee: Selection for high-yielding cvs resistant to rust (Hemileia vastatrix). Mangoes: Studies on the control of bacterial spot (Erwinia mangiferae) and soft brown rot in cold storage (Hendersonia creberrima); and investigations on bark cracking and jelly seed (a physiological ripening disorder). Pineapples: Post-harvest fungicidal treatments; and pre-planting treatment of crowns with nematicides. Tea: Selection; and mechanical harvesting and pruning studies.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Research on deciduous fruit briefly reported here included: Apples: The effect of pruning on bitter pit incidence; pot trials on re-establishment disease; and trials on ULV spraying of fungicides. Pears: Studies on fruit set in Packham's Triumph. Peaches: Breeding and selection; studies on rosette disease; and insecticide evaluations for the control of false codling moth.
