Abstract : Fruits of the cultivars Tommy Atkins and Keitt, picked on 2 dates, were investigated in trials in 15-litre jars with 4 different CA conditions at 12 to 13°C; they were examined after 6, 8 and 10 weeks of storage. All fruits were treated with Sportak [prochloraz] at 0.2% which proved effective in controlling Alternaria alternata. The long flowering period in this species results in uneven ripening on the tree and the fruits picked for storage trials were of varying maturity. Although it was possible to maintain the fruits in excellent condition for 8 weeks, ripening during shelf life was uneven. Dessert quality was not of the same grade as in fruits picked and ripened after harvest. However, 3 sprays of 1% calcium nitrate had a positive effect on keeping quality.
