Abstract : Mature green fruits were individually seal-packaged in polyethylene film (0.011 mm thick) or PVC film (0.014 mm thick) and stored at 13°C with 78% RH or under ambient conditions (28-33°, 80% RH). The packaged fruit retained its quality for 6-9 days at ambient temperature and 30-36 days at 13°, while unpackaged fruit rapidly became shrivelled and overripe. PVC film was more effective in delaying ripening than polyethylene film. Fruits stored in polypropylene bags (0.031 mm thick) containing either air or 5% CO2 and 5% O2, or stored in a low pressure chamber (260 Torr), showed delayed ripening but underwent fermentation within a few weeks at 13°.
