Abstract : The colour, shape, taste and nutritive value of 11 tropical and subtropical fruits from Thailand are briefly described. The list comprises durians, mangoes, longans, litchi, rambutans, mangosteens, sugar apples (Annona squamosa), jackfruits, carambola (Averrhoa carambola), guavas and pummelos. Thai tropical fruits are assessed as health foods and fruit production data are presented for 1982/83-1985/86, with particular attention to durians, longans and mangoes. Statistics are given for annual Thai fruit exports from 1981-87 (also 1988 January-June). Marketing opportunities in the European and Japanese markets are assessed. Thai fruits for export have performed well since the beginning of the 1980s and prospects for further expansion are very bright. However, there are constraints, namely: the seasonal variability in output; production areas scattered throughout the country; the many varieties of fruit planted; and the small scale of fruit production which varies from year to year. Fruit growers and exporters are more often than not, ignorant of the tastes and preferred varieties of their customers. Since quality is a top priority, fruit growers and exporters must know about pre- and postharvest technologies, pest and disease control, and improved packaging techniques if future successes are to be guaranteed.
