Abstract : The Konkan region of Maharashtra is an important fruit farming area, but deficiencies in the marketing system have retarded production, and the economy remains at a subsistence level. Preharvest village level contractors decide the price of mangoes at the flowering stage, offering a minimum price for the prospective crop, and the same process is followed with some modification for other fruit crops. The producer's share in the final price of mangoes is only 18%. Organized middlemen fix prices while farmers lack market intelligence and facilities for collection and storage of produce.
