Abstract : The lack of a marketing orientation in Australian horticultural production is discussed. The paper illustrates, by reference to projects in the marketing and postharvest handling of apples, mangoes and pawpaws, the implications of the change in approach made by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries to reorient its perspective from a largely production to a marketing view of horticultural activity. Such a change has caused differences in the selection criteria for research, development and extension projects and in the utilization of technology in marketing.
