Abstract : Trials were started in 1977 with the cultivar Dashehari, with the first crop being harvested in 1982, and the yield data were recorded annually up to 1987. A wide variation in yield was observed in spite of uniform growing conditions. When the pre-bearing expenditure was taken into account the orchard efficiency continued to be negative until the 5th bearing year; in the 6th year orchard efficiency rose to + 35%. It is suggested that to compensate for the early non-productive period intercropping should be considered.
