Abstract : The mango seed is described, including consideration of its polyembryony. Seeds were non-dormant and germinated readily when exposed to the air in a humid environment, at a wide range of temperatures (20-45°C). Germination rate was highest at 30-35°. Loss of water from stored seeds and loss of germination capacity were rapid at high storage temperatures (20 or 30°). Storage in dry conditions or at a low temperature, but above the lethal temperature, did not maintain germinability for a sufficiently long period. More satisfactory storage for up to 12 weeks was achieved by germinating the seed and maintaining the seedlings at 15° on sterile cotton wool with deionized water.
