Abstract : The development of young mango plants was followed in detail. The monopodial stem is built up from a series of growth units produced in successive growth waves. The production of a growth unit was divided into a number of stages beginning with bud growth and ending with a quiescent period. The development of the root system did not show a similar rhythmic growth. Studies on leaf initiation in the stem apex showed that the leaves were initiated well before they developed during the rhythmic growth phase. Production of vessels in the xylem showed relations with the growth rhythm.
