Abstract : Tropical and subtropical fruits grown commercially in Florida occupy 9246 ha. Avocados (4657 ha) are the most widely planted, followed by Tahiti limes [Citrus latifolia] (2835 ha) and mangoes (1012 ha). In addition to the 16 crops grown commercially, 20 other fruits and nuts are planted in limited quantities in home gardens and roadside plantings. Some of these, such as canistel (Pouteria campechiana) and white sapote (Casimiroa edulis), show promise for commercial production, and planting of these is currently increasing. Pineapple planting showed a recent increase due to experimental plantings, but these have now been removed. Some crops of the humid tropics have no potential for Florida because of climatic requirements, but merit trials in Colombia and other countries which are climatically suitable.
