Abstract : In trials during 1987-89, mango cv. Valencia trees were given combinations of 5, 10 or 20 cm³ Cultar (25% paclobutrazol)/tree, applied to the soil each year in July, Nov. or both. Application of Cultar in 3 consecutive years decreased the number of panicles but increased fruit set and yield. Application for 2 consecutive years gave an earlier harvest and increased fruit size but application in the third year reduced these effects. Cultar reduced tree size by 11-13%, without affecting yield. The rate of 20 cm³ appeared to be sufficient, and it was concluded that application for 2 consecutive years should be followed by a year without application, before application again in the following year.
