Abstract : Severe infestations by the scale insects Aspidiotus destructor, Aonidiella inornata and Pulvinaria polygonata [Chloropulvinaria polygonata] were observed in mango trees in western Uttar Pradesh. The biology of Aspidiotus destructor and the damage it caused were observed weekly for 1 year on potted plants and in the orchards. In 1986-88, 14 insecticide treatments were tested against C. polygonata and Aonidiella inornata. A. inornata was the most common species and was abundant in all localities observed. In 1986-87, the mean incidence of scale insects was 93.9% (range 60 to 100%) in 24 orchards in 2 areas of the Bulandshahar district. The mean number of scale insects per leaf was 21-1640. In 1987-88, there were 343.9-714.4 A. inornata per leaf in 14 orchards in the Meerut and Muzaffarnagar districts. Aspidiotus destructor completed 6 generations/year. Quinalphos and monocrotophos, both at 0.05%, gave effective control of C. polygonata nymphs. Aonidiella inornata nymphs were controlled effectively by quinalphos, monocrotophos, methyl-O-demeton [demeton-O-methyl], dimethoate, methyl parathion [parathion-methyl], diazinon, dichlorvos, thiometon and phosphamidon, all at 0.05%, and cypermethrin and fenvalerate, both at 0.005%. Of these, the first 5 treatments and cypermethrin at 0.005% significantly reduced populations of A. inornata females.
