Abstract : Petroleum ether extracts of seeds of 16 species of oil plants were tested at up to 1000 p.p.m. for antifeedant activity against 4th-instar larvae of the noctuid Spodoptera litura. Taking into account the percentage of leaf area protected, Vateria indica, Butea frondosa [B. monosperma], Annona squamosa, Bassia latifolia, mango and Polyalthia longifolia were highly active, while Sapindus trifoliatus, Datura alba [D. metel], Hydnocarpus wightiana and Semecarpus anacardium were moderately active. Positive activity was correlated with the percentage content of linoleic and oleic acid in the seed oil.
