Abstract : Total imports of tropical and subtropical fruits into France (excluding citrus fruits) saw a 4% decline from 595 956 t in 1987 to 572 476 t in 1988. In global terms, demand increased for small tropical fruits such as mangoes, guavas, mangosteens (6326 to 7167 t), pawpaws (540 to 751 t), and litchi (2492 to 3245 t). Banana imports changed little: 445 306 t in 1987 to 454 845 t in 1988. A greater fall was registered in imports of pineapples (66 294 to 58 593 t) and avocados (75 490 to 51 120 t). Countries from which French imports are on the increase or decline are identified, with reference to bananas, pineapples, avocados, mangoes, pawpaws and litchi. Turning to citrus fruits, total imports of 1 221 048 t in 1986/87 declined to 1 218 994 t in 1987/88 (a fall of about 2%). Trends for clementines (289 570 to 247 172 t) and for lemons (141 065 to 134 308 t) were the significant contributing factor. Oranges showed a notable increase from 620 331 to 666 034 t. Grapefruit imports continued their upward progression, registering 147 554 t in 1987/88 compared to 143 825 t in 1986/87. Tables of imports, graphs and wholesale prices at Rungis are presented.
