Abstract : Data on capital investment in machinery and equipment, raw materials, period of working, persons employed, quantity processed, selling price, etc., were collected from 15 mango factories in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, for the 1987 production season. The conclusions are that: (1) more working capital is required than fixed capital; (2) costs and returns analysis shows that processing mango into pulp is profitable; (3) the present level of production is above the break-even point and hence the processing units are profitable; (4) processing of mango in both small and large units (not mid- sized) is efficient and economical: per unit cost of processing the finished product is low, added value is high and capital efficiency is also high in these sized units.
