Abstract : The most commonly grown fruit and vegetables in Nigeria are listed, problems that weeds cause and the reasons for the high costs of control are outlined, and the concept of the critical period of weed interference and the main techniques of weed control (manual or mechanical slashing, the use of cover crops or herbicides) are explained. This is followed by descriptions of the recommended means of general weed control in bananas and plantains, pineapples, citrus fruits, mangoes, guavas, avocados, pawpaws, tomatoes, onions, Capsicum, okra and leafy vegetables. The control of specific problematic weeds (Imperata cylindrica, Panicum maximum, P. repens, Cyperus spp., Brachiaria spp., Amaranthus sp. and Celosia sp.) is also discussed. Convenient-to-use rate:concn conversion tables are provided for a variety of herbicidal formulations.
