Abstract : To test the hypothesis that ethylene production plays a direct role in floral initiation in mango, ethylene levels were measured in vessels containing whole plants with flower buds at all stages, and in buds, stems and leaves detached from 20-year-old cv. Tommy Atkins trees. No significant increases in ethylene production over basal levels were found in any of these experiments nor in mango trees whose foliage had been sprayed with KNO3 (0, 20 or 80 µg/litre). The increased ethylene levels that followed the application of ethephon were dose-related, but the treatment did not stimulate flowering.
