Abstract : A study on softwood grafting in mango was carried out at the Horticultural Research Station, Bangalore during 1985-86. In the first experiment, Alphonso scions preconditioned for ten days were grafted onto 3- to 9-month-old Nekkare rootstocks at monthly intervals. In the second experiment, scions preconditioned for 0, 5 and 10 days were grafted onto 7-, 8- or 9-month-old Nekkare rootstocks. In the third experiment, six scion cultivars (Alphonso, Dashehari, Langra, Mallika, Pairi and Totapuri) were grafted onto 6-month-old Nekkare rootstocks. The rate of grafting was recorded 30, 45 and 60 days after grafting in all three experiments. In the first experiment, the 7-month-old rootstock gave the highest success rate (95% after 30 and 45 days, and 90% after 60 days). Scions preconditioned for 10 days and grafted onto 7-month-old rootstocks resulted in the highest success rate (93.33%) in the second experiment. The Dashehari scions gave the highest success rate (100% graft take at 30 days, 95% at 45 days and 90% at 60 days) followed by Totapuri and Langra.
